Once inside, roots continue growing and create blockages that trap debris. The root mass also exerts outward pressure on the pipe walls, accelerating crack formation. Age itself is a critical factor. Cast iron pipes typically last 50–75 years before the interior begins deteriorating from corrosion. Even small vertical shifts in the soil can create misaligned joints where pipes connect, allowing root entry and leakage.
The solution depends on the damage severity and location. For localized cracks, trenchless pipe bursting or epoxy lining can reinforce existing pipes without full excavation. For collapsed sections or multiple failures, traditional trenching and replacement with modern PVC is often the most cost-effective approach. PVC's flexibility allows it to accommodate Houston's soil movement without cracking, and its smooth interior resists root intrusion better than older materials.
