The expansive clay soil that dominates the Houston region is uniquely problematic for underground water lines. Unlike stable soil types found in other parts of the country, our clay experiences significant volume changes as moisture content fluctuates seasonally. During dry periods, clay shrinks and creates voids around buried pipes; when heavy rains arrive, the soil expands and exerts tremendous lateral pressure on pipe walls and joints. This constant stress cycle, repeated year after year, eventually causes rigid pipe materials—particularly older PVC and concrete—to crack or separate at their joints. The problem intensifies in areas with mature trees or extended drought periods, both common in the Greater Houston suburbs.

Tree root intrusion ranks as the second most common failure mechanism we encounter.
